DevLog 1 - The Basic Premise
For several years, I've been a big fan of the word of Nordic Weasel, and especially the 5 Parsecs from Home and 5 Leagues from the Borderlands projects. I've also for some years been toying around in a certain setting, the Drift, while playing various OSR titles - most extensively in Cairn and Maze Rats, with some Primal Quest. I recently played around in Ironsworn the Sundered Isles, and got the oomph to begin this project.
In the long term, Brass and Bone will be my project to explore the Drift, taking the ideas of 5 Parsecs and the like and implementing them into something not quite a wargame, utterly playable solo, and playable without the requirement of table space - things that have become important to me as my time has dwindled and my space has gotten smaller, or rather gotten more cluttered with work files.
As of today, 66 pages of this game are written and it is nearly in a playable state. So, over time, I will be sharing readied sections. Starting with the brief bit that follows: the Basics. More will come soon. The SRD link already has a bit more added.
THE BASICS
Nomenclature
d6: A six-sided die.
d2: A coin toss or a d6 roll divided by 3, rounded up to the nearest whole number.
d3: a d6 roll divided by 2, rounded up to the nearest whole number.
d66: Two d6s rolled at once, with the value of one die being the ones digit and the other the tens digit. 36 possible results.
d666: Three d6s rolled at once, with the value of one die being the ones digit, one being the tens digit, and the third the hundreds digit. 216 possible results.
The Check
The primary mechanic is a simple check: a d6 is rolled, plus certain modifiers from character skill or gear, and compared to a pre-set target value or an opposed check roll in which a higher value prevails. Different situations may call for different checks.
The Campaign
Play is divided into a series of Campaign Turns - procedures which determine the experiences and challenges characters face, leading to Encounters.
The Encounter
An encounter is simply a set, scene, or battle which the characters must endure. It may be a simple, single check to carry out a trade, find work, avoid a trap, etc., or it may be an extended battle. Encounters are a key part of campaign procedure; after each, the status of the party and world are reassessed.
The Libra
The currency of the game. Historically, a roman pound of silver.
